An absolute tour de force. Based on a novel by Ikenami Shotaro, this is one of the most exciting films to come out of Japan. The leader of a band of thieves, Nakadai stakes everything on one last big job. Incredible obstacles arise, not the least of which are caused by the government officials trying to trap the gang through a series of raids and ambushes. This film shows sword fighting like it’s never been seen before. Extraordinary action, and a thoroughly complex plot make this a must see!

The seventh installment of this FANTASTIC series of stand-alone films is finally presented the way it should be -
In GREAT QUALITY with PROPER removable English subtitles!!

PLEASE NOTE: This installment of 'The Bored Hatamoto', as well as the other 8 films in this series, are STAND-ALONE movies. They are NOT sequels to each other, nor do you have to watch them in order to understand what is going on.

When Saotome Mondonosuke, master swordsman and ‘Hatamoto' (direct retainer of the Shogun), hears rumors of a Daimyo’s plot to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate, he launches a private investigation. With the help of his sister Kikuji, his faithful steward, Kinai, the Kaga Clan’s former fencing instructor and a mysterious woman named Kocho, they begin to unravel the twisted web of deceit, treachery and secrets within the Kaga Clan!

One of the most popular motion pictures of all time, 'The Bored Samurai' has been revived by talented young actor Kitaoji Kinya, the son of Ichikawa Utaemon, who made the role famous in more than 25 films. Saotome Mondonosuke is a 'Hatamoto' or direct retainer of the Shogun. The crescent shaped scar on his forehead is a license given him by the Shogun to kill anyone he deems to be a villain.

When Ichikawa passed away, it was thought that the character had died with him. But like Mondonosuke, who needs constant action to fight boredom, his greatest enemy, Kinya had to revive the role to honor his late father and carry on the tradition. A rousing success was recorded in these made for television movies, and this entry (the seventh) is no exception.

A strong performance that reflects well upon his father and an interesting story make this film required viewing.

Power, corruption, seduction, and betrayal ignite the elegant, erotic, and violent realm of the samurai. It is the middle of the 18th Century, and Japan is under the reign of Iyeharu, the 10th Tokugawa Shogun. This era is commonly known as the Tanuma era, named for the powerful Shogunate minister Tanuma (TANBA Tetsuro), who has created a world of politics controlled by bribery and concessions. The general corruption and resulting lawlessness have spawned menacing secret organizations, which thrive in the shadowy underworld. The people call such groups "Hunters In Darkness". Gomyo (NAKADAI Tatsuya) is the feared and respected Boss of one of these groups.

Yataro Tanigawa, a one-eyed hired assassin, impresses yakuza boss Gomyo Kiyoemon with his skill. Gomyo hires Tanigawa as his bodyguard, or yojimbo, to protect him during an inter-clan conflict. Tanigawa quickly rises in stature in the clan, but finds his boss's enemies almost overwhelming!

This is another masterpiece from filmmaker KOBAYASHI Masaki, noted director of HARA KIRI, KWAIDAN, and SAMURAI REBELLION. The Japanese title is actually translated as “We give our lives for nothing”, and is the true heart and soul of this story. Based on a novel by YAMAMOTO Shugoro, who also wrote the books upon which SANJURO, KILL, and AFTER THE RAIN, were based, it tells the tale of a group of thieves and murderers who find it within themselves to sacrifice their lives with no hope of personal gain. NAKADAI Tatsuya stars as Sada, an expert with knives, whose mysterious past comes to light as he leads a group of fugitives in their last-ditch battle to save their home, a dilapidated inn, which does not welcome strangers in its doors. KATSU Shintaro plays against type in a pivotal role as one of the only outsiders ever allowed to drink at the inn. Tension and suspense lead up to a conclusion like no other.

A magnificent motion picture, and a true work of art.

One of the last works by Master filmmaker, Gosha Hideo, this tale of a Lady Gambler and her epic game of chance with the mysterious expert 'Unmovable Tsune' puts her life on the line. As with all of Gosha's films there is intrigue, betrayal, sex, and awesome violence. Nakadai Tatsuya is perfect in his role, hiding a secret that can make his life a fiery Hell, and threatens to take everyone else with him! The beautiful Higuchi Kaneko is the star, though, giving a performance for the ages as she searches for vengeance while helping her brother fight off the Yakuza who have taken over the town.

In order to make him a spy for the government, master swordsman Sakakibara Kazue is wrongfully ordered to commit ritual suicide for overlooking the smuggling of illegal goods. Before his 'Seppuku' can be performed, he is ordered to go undercover with a team of other 'dead' prisoners on a mission to find and destroy a cannon factory being used by the Owari and Takamatsu Clans as they try to usurp power and gain the position of Shogun for one of their own. One of the great early samurai film stars Amachi Shigeru gives an outstanding performance as the government agent forced to find and destroy the hidden factory. As his 'death' has been made public it is of the utmost importance that nobody recognizes him in this dangerous mission.

A strong made-for-television movie with superb action from one of Japan's great stars.

Nemuri Kyoshiro's discovery of a plot to have an imposter succeed to the position of Shogun leads him to Kyoto in order to help Tokugawa Ieyoshi, and keep the succession in its proper order. Noted film actor Tamura Masakazu returns as Nemuri Kyoshiro in this made for TV Special after his successful portrayal of the 'Full-Moon' swordsman in the TV Series. Kyoshiro rescues Shizu who was being abused by her husband, ever since she had been violated by the man posing as Ieyoshi. He then learned that Ieyoshi had been acting oddly ever since returning from Kyoto 6 months ago. Sir Fumiya's investigation of the O'oku (Shogun’s harem in Edo Castle) uncovered the plot and reported that Sir Higo-no-kami had been controlling the fraud. That's when Kyoshiro heads to Kyoto to find clues... The original story ”Nemuri Kyoshiro Komu Nisshi” for this TV movie was written by famous author, Shibata Renzaburo. Tamura Masakazu takes the Nemuri character to a whole new dimension. He can play the sensitive, the just, the cold-blooded, and at times, the ultra violent Nemuri. Adding to that, excellent swordfights make this one of Tamura's all-time best!

This film was based on a story written by SHIMOZAWA Kan (creator of the Zato Ichi character), which he researched by interviewing surviving family members of the Shinsengumi, the Para-military police force made up of ronin under the leadership of Kondo Isami. The central character, however, was a spy for the organization Yamazaki Susumu, and it gives a realistic view of this infamous group who many credit with saving the Emperor’s life during the incident at Ikedaya in Kyoto.

One of the most memorable roles for Sonny Chiba was his portrayal of Yagyu Jubei, the one-eyed master swordsman who helped protect Shogun Iemitsu during the early days of Japan’s 17th Century. The Yagyu Clan under Jubei’s father Yagyu Tajima, must protect young Shogun Iemitsu from the plots of those seeking to overthrow him. This show consists of 39 hour-long episodes which feature awesome fighting from the Japan Action Club!

Our story opens during the last days of the second Shogun. The Shogun has two sons. Their names are Iemitsu and Tadanaga. Iemitsu is the elder son and is expected to become the next Shogun. However, the real lion’s share of the power is held by the Shogun.

However, the Emperor’s approval is required when choosing a new Shogun. The Emperor belongs to the Noble class. This rules governing behavior for the Nobles are distinctly different from the rules for the Samurai. The main goal of the Nobles is to restore the true governing power to Japan to the Emperor. To accomplish this goal, the Nobles feel the more chaos the better. The Yagyu Conspiracy retells the one of the most exciting and intriguing chapters found in Japanese history...

This volume contains two episodes, mastered from a new print, with removable English subtitles.
