No democratic country lived in such fear during the cold war as Japan. So close to Russia and China and the only country to suffer a real nuclear attack, their paranoia was very real. One of several films to capture fears of a global atomic war, this still is a very well constructed disaster movie. Its central characters are not scientists and politicians, but ordinary people that we can relate to. Comedian / singer Frankie Sakai ("Mothra") stars as an ordinary man whose only concern is his beloved family. Ambiguous English speaking actors like Harold Conway plays out the two nuclear powers. Starring Akira Takarada, Yumi Shirakawa, Chieko Nakakita, and Jerry Ito (Sakai's nemesis in "Mothra") with a moving score by Ikuma Dan. Worldwide destruction, courtesy of Eiji Tsuburaya, was so effective that Toho reused sequences for the next 15 years!
