The film depicts how the teenaged Yue Fei (kung fu star Tien Peng) learned martial arts, got his mighty weapon, and romanced his wife. Later he entered the national contest of martial arts, and had to fight his way out of a legion of challengers, including an arrogant aristocrat played by famous screen villain Chen Hung Lieh. The Decisive Battle was among the recommended films at the 9th Golden Horse Awards in 1971, and You Long, who played the 7-year-old Yue Fei, stood out and took home the Best Child Actor award.
